My Parkinson’s Journey: A Grateful Life Beyond the Shakes

Diagnosed with Young-Onset Parkinson’s Disease at 47, I initially felt a sense of uncertainty. However, I made a conscious decision: Parkinson’s would not define me.

My journey has been one of embracing a proactive approach to living well. While I experience the typical challenges of Parkinson’s, I’ve found that a combination of:

  • Exercise: Daily movement, including PIYO Yoga, BARRE, and Spinning, keeps me active and engaged.
  • Nutrition: A mindful approach to diet and nutrition supports my overall well-being.
  • Positive Mindset: Cultivating a positive attitude has been essential in navigating the ups and downs.
  • Community: Connecting with others through programs like the Momentum program at the York Jewish Community Center has been incredibly valuable.

The Momentum and P.U.N.C.H (Parkinson’s Unified Neurological Challenges) Programs, specifically designed for individuals with Parkinson’s and other neurological conditions, has significantly improved my balance, strength, and flexibility.

But perhaps the greatest benefit has been the strong sense of community I’ve found. Working alongside others who understand the challenges of Parkinson’s provides invaluable support and encouragement.

My journey is a testament to the fact that a fulfilling life with Parkinson’s is possible. With the right mindset and a proactive approach, we can all live life to the fullest.

Life With Parkinson’s – Fly Fishing: Finding Joy in the Flow

Fly fishing has been a lifelong passion, and even with Parkinson’s, I continue to find joy in this challenging and rewarding pursuit.

My fly-tying bench is a testament to my dedication – seven boxes overflowing with dry flies, nymphs, wet flies, streamers, and mergers, all meticulously crafted by my own hands.

Sharing this passion with others is a source of great satisfaction. I often tie flies for my brother and friends who are eager to learn the art of fly fishing.

From the streams of central Pennsylvania – the Yellow Breeches, Lycoming, Loyalsock, Penns Creek, and Codorus – to the legendary waters of the Delaware River (both East and West Branches), I’ve spent countless hours exploring the beauty and serenity of these rivers.

A highlight was my 2023 trip to Montana, where I fulfilled a lifelong dream of fly fishing the iconic Gallatin, Madison, and Missouri Rivers, as well as the renowned DePuy (Armstrong Spring Creek).

The thrill of catching a wild trout, knowing that I had crafted the very fly that lured it in, is an indescribable feeling. It’s a reminder that with Parkinson’s, challenges can be overcome.

Never Give up on your dreams. Life is too short so take advantage of the opportunity to do things on your bucket list.

Life With Parkinson’s – Guitar: Finding Harmony and Resilience

At 54, I embarked on a new adventure: learning to play guitar. This journey has been a testament to the power of perseverance and the importance of lifelong learning.

Learning guitar has taught me the invaluable “3 P’s”:

  • Patience: Recognizing that learning any new skill takes time and there will be setbacks.
  • Persistence: Overcoming frustration and pushing through challenges, always remembering to take breaks and return with renewed focus.
  • Perseverance: Staying committed to the journey, knowing that consistent practice will lead to progress.

Studies have shown that learning to play an instrument can have significant benefits for motor skills and cognitive function. While it can be challenging, the joy of creating music and the satisfaction of mastering a new skill make it all worthwhile.

I enjoy playing both acoustic and electric guitars, though I’m not sure my family always appreciates my musical renditions! I also supplement my practice with online learning courses, continually striving to improve my skills.

Life with Parkinson’s – My Family

My life is enriched by the love and support of my wonderful family. I’ve been married to my wife, Mary, for 38 years, and together we’ve raised two amazing children.

Our daughter, Emily, recently moved to Philadelphia after living in Poland. We cherish the visits and the opportunity to reconnect. Our son, Derek, and his wife, Molly, and our granddaughter Bonnie reside in the Fishtown section of Philadelphia, and we enjoy staying in touch and sharing special moments together.

Adding to the lively atmosphere of our home are two energetic rescue Boxer dogs, Duke and Katie. They bring boundless joy and companionship to our lives.

I’m fortunate to have such a loving and supportive family by my side as I navigate life with Parkinson’s. Their unwavering love and encouragement are a constant source of strength and inspiration.
