Live Parkinson’s Mission

The mission of Live Parkinson’s is to help people with Parkinson’s Disease and their families live a great quality of life after a Parkinson’s diagnosis.

My Personal Journey with Parkinson’s

I was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease at the age of 46.

I spent several months researching everything I could about Parkinson’s Disease and studied others with Parkinson’s who were doing exceptional things (running marathons, competitive swimming, cycling, etc.).

I took what I learned and developed 4 strategies (pillars) that I I’ve been using to live a great quality of life with Parkinson’s. The 4 strategies I developed were:

  1. Exercise
  2. Nutrition
  3. Attitude
  4. Community/Social Interaction

These strategies have been successful in helping me live an exceptional life with Parkinson’s Disease and are the focal point of this website to help others living with Parkinson’s lead a great quality of life.

Living with Parkinson’s Disease Success Stories

These are personal success stories of friends with Parkinson’s who are living their best life with Parkinson’s Disease. They stepped out of their comfort zone and took on new challenges and are fulfilling their dreams.

Press on with Parkinson’s

I met Joan in the Momentum program for people living with Parkinson’s and other neurologic disorders. Momentum is a daily 1 hour program designed to focus on improving the physical, emotional, cognitive and social well-being of class participants.

Initially, Joan was quiet, but focused on giving her best effort. She worked hard during class and wanted to improve her quality of life. After, Joan read my book Spectacular Life, she approached me and said, “your book inspired me to do one of thing I’ve always wanted to do but was too afraid.” I said, “what is you’ve always wanted to do?” and Joan replied, “I’ve always wanted to start a website to share my poetry and stories on living with Parkinson’s, would you help me? I said “absolutely!”

Joan and I sat together and set-up her website. Today, Joan writes and posts inspiring stories on her website: PressonwithParkinsons.com. I highly recommend her website to get her perspective on how someone who had a devastating diagnosis of Parkinson’s Disease, used that to live their best life.

Today, Joan is one of the leaders in the Momentum group and even leads a monthly social lunch get together with anyone interested in participating. Joan has become a real inspiration for the class.

The Music Man

This is the story of my good friend Andy. Andy was an exceptional music teacher, loved by his students and the staff because of his positive outgoing personality. I was fortunate to meet Andy in the Momentum program for Parkinson’s that had just launched.

I could tell right away that Andy and I would hit it off, because our personalities were similar. We love to have a good time and make other people laugh. Andy and I quickly became friends and participated in partnered activities in the Momentum classes. Andy was viewed by the others in the class as one of the leaders because of the effort he put forth, the empathy he showed towards others and his positive, accepting personality.

Andy, has had his share of setbacks because of Parkinson’s but he has let that deter him from continuing to be an example for others in the class. Andy started a monthly breakfast for the group, to help build comradery with the group outside of class, he has led golf outings for the group and recently has begun to take up Boxing to help manage his Parkinson’s symptoms.

Andy was instrumental sharing his expertise as members of the Momentum class went on tour to sing Christmas song to one of the local Nursing homes. This brought smiles to the residents who otherwise might not have any visitors during the Christmas season. Andy is always willing to share his knowledge and love of music with the group, but more importantly, Andy is a friend, leader and coach for the Momentum group.
